The function of the Package Development Engineer is to improve the design of existing containers via process improvement and technological innovation and develop new containers that create value for Silgan Containers and its customers, including the primary functions:

• Knowledge: Know and apply written safety procedures and take appropriate action to maintain a safe work environment within established standards and guidelines.
• Project Management: Package Development Engineers will manage and coordinate major projects. Prepare and manage time lines (Gantt Chart) to track projects from start to completion.
• Interactions: Interface with various Silgan internal groups for timely completion of trials at Silgan Plants.
• Research: Investigate new package technologies for applications to metal food containers.
• Communications: Write technical reports, projects updates, trip reports, qualification guidelines, procedures, give oral presentations, etc.
• Interpersonal Skills: Must interface well with all levels of management including plant managers, supervisors, hourly employees, sales, corporate personnel as well as customer and supplier technical representatives. Will work on projects in a team environment.
• Group Interaction: Interface with other Technology Center employees to provide support to our customers.
• Development: Work with Silgan, suppliers and customers to develop improvements in current packages and package manufacturing processes.
• Buy Off: Work with other groups (Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Systems) to buy off new equipment.
• Travel: Have to visit various manufacturing facilities and will be required to travel approximately 35% of the time.
